EASTERN ART

EASTERN ART

The earliest known paintings in East Asia were painted on the walls of tombs, during the last two millennia, a variety of distinctive portable formats for viewing and storing paintings. Typically, Korean and japness paintings and calligraphy are created by an artist on sheets of paper or silk laid on a flat surface. The finished work is then mounted on a support system in the suitable format. Because water-soluble glue is traditionally used to adhere the picture to the mounting, the two can be separated and the latter replaced from time to time to help preserve the work of art. In all cases, it has never been the tradition in East Asia to display works of art for long periods of time. They are shown for short occasions and then put away in storage.

Although Korean painting is not well known in the west, it has held an important place in Korea from a very early date.  One of the difficulties in studying Korean art is that conflict which has been so much a feature of life on the Korean peninsula through the ages has destroyed so much of what certainly existed in prior periods.  Korean art is fascinating because although it has been deeply influenced by Chinese art .The richness and vivid colors used in japness paintings marked a high point for Asian painting. The development of art in this period was purely Korean and very different from Chinese artistic traditions. Korean painting although on the face adhering to Chinese models developed a clear Korean tradition in painting that yielded numerous unique developments.  As Korea proceeded into the 20th Century, Korean artists could look back on a tradition of painting that yielded many Korean forms and renderings of older more traditional techniques and subjects

THAI ART

THAI ART

Thai painters began experimenting with Impressionism and Cubism to a lesser extent. Thai painters chose nature themes or depicted rural scenes, usually devoid of people. Angkarn Kalayanapongsa, Misiem Yipintsoi and Tawan Duchanee led Thai modern art into different forms of art than seen in Thailand to that time. One of the outstanding Thai artists of this later period was Chakrabhand Posayakri, a portraitist interpreting classical themes in soft colors. Another highly regarded Thai artist of this period who excelled in realistic depictions of Thai scenes was Acharn Saard. His paintings which are primarily in oils offer a richness of color and a realistic depth of presentation which few Thai artists before or since have equaled.

Japanese Art has been influenced by the invasion of new and alien ideas that get absorbed, imitated and finally, assimilated. The earliest complex art came out of the 7th an 8th centuries. This early art was strongly influenced by Buddhism. In the 9th century Japanese artists turned away from China's influence to develop more native forms. Brush Painting is the preferred art form in Japan. Japanese painting was introduced to western influence in the 1870's from Italian artists. At the same time Japanese artists retain traditional themes and techniques. In the later half of the 19th century, Japanese art, which is valued for its simplicity and colorful style, had an impact on other western forms of art

Starting around 4000 B.C. traditional Chinese painting has developed continuously over a period of more than six thousand years.  Its growth has inevitably reflected the changes of time and social conditions.  In its early stage of development, Chinese painting was closely related to the other crafts, from pottery to the decorations used on the bronzes, carved jade and lacqerware. Following the introduction of Buddhism to China from India during the 1st century A.D. and the consequent carving of grottoes and building of temples, the art of painting religious murals gradually gained in prominence. The range of subject matters dealt with in figure painting was extended far beyond religious themes during the Song dynasty (960-1127),.  Paintings of historical character and stories of everyday life became extremely popular.  Techniques were also further refined. Landscape painting had already established itself as an independent form of expression by the 4th century.

In Vietnam, painting on silk is popular.  Vietnamese artists found these techniques to be a unique way to create mystique and a charming sense of mystique in their paintings.   By using contemporary colors, Vietnamese silk painting has won the hearts of many art lovers. After a long period of development of techniques and styles, silk painting reached its highest period of success during the years 1925-1945.  The Vietnamese style of silk painting emphasized softness, elegance and a flexibility of style.  These qualities of silk painting were different compared to, at the time, to the dominant French and European oil painting.  In 1946, Vietnamese silk painting was accepted and introduced to the world when Vietnamese silk paintings won two prizes at the official Salon organized in France.  Silk painting is now popular in Vietnam and has its own unique character and transparency of colors that are different from those of ancient China and Japan
